My Commander

My Commander (MyCo) is a very small, free, dual-pane file manager for Windows, with built-in SSH, SFTP, SCP and FTP clients, archive tools, viewers and checksum utilities. It suits admins who want a lightweight Total Commander-style tool for jump boxes and older PCs. If you are looking for a My Commander download, know one thing up front: the last stable release is version 4.0 from April 2017. A 5.0 beta and nightly builds are offered on the developer’s site, but they carry no release dates.

That makes My Commander a dormant project rather than an abandoned one. It still works and the site is still online, but it is not actively maintained, and that matters for a tool that opens SSH sessions. Use it as a handy local utility, and choose an actively maintained client for production server access.

How sysadmins use it

Verify an ISO or installer before deployment

1. Select the downloaded file in one pane and open the checksum tool.
2. Pick SHA256 or SHA512 and compare the result with the hash published by the vendor.
3. For a second, built-in check on any Windows machine, use PowerShell:

Move files to a Linux server over SFTP with a key

1. Create a new SFTP connection with the host, port 22 and user name.
2. Point it at your private key instead of a password. Key login was added in 4.0.
3. Copy files between the local pane and the remote pane. F3 previews remote files, and the reconnect button restores a dropped session.
4. If the server has disabled older SSH algorithms and the connection fails, use a maintained client instead. MyCo’s SSH code has not been updated since 2017.

Give a deep log folder a drive letter

MyCo can map a folder to an empty drive letter as a virtual drive. The same result from the command line, for scripts or other tools:

The second line removes the mapping.

Wipe sensitive exports

1. Select the files, for example old CSV exports with user data.
2. Use the shredder function instead of normal delete, so the content is overwritten before removal.
3. On SSDs, overwriting does not guarantee erasure because of wear levelling. Rely on full-disk encryption there.

Install and first run

Windows. The program is under 2 MB and uses little memory, which is its main selling point on old hardware. The developer’s history lists Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 (with high-DPI support) and both 32- and 64-bit systems. Windows 11 is not mentioned, so test it on your build before rolling it out.

Which build to choose. 4.0 is the last build marked stable. The 5.0 beta adds monochrome icons, directory size on the space key, per-monitor high-DPI v2, a hardware-accelerated PDF viewer and OneDrive support, but it has no release date or changelog beyond that list. Treat it as a preview.

Security notes. Store SSH keys with a passphrase, and do not keep production credentials in an unmaintained client.

Limitations

• Dormant: no stable release since April 2017, and the beta is undated.
• Closed source, so nobody else can maintain it or audit the SSH and FTP code.
• Windows only. There is no Linux or macOS version, despite what some software catalogues claim.
• WebDAV support is labelled experimental.
• Documentation is limited to the feature list on the website and a community forum.
• Its SSH/SFTP stack may not negotiate with hardened servers that allow only modern algorithms.

My Commander vs alternatives

Explorer++ is a free, open-source, tabbed Explorer replacement whose latest stable release is 1.4.0 (2024). It is a better long-term choice for local file work, though it has no SFTP. For dual-pane work with active development, Double Commander (open source, Windows/Linux/macOS) and Total Commander (shareware, conditionally free) are the usual picks. For SFTP and SCP, WinSCP is the standard maintained client on Windows.
